It's time for another exciting edition of StrideBox review. For those who don't know, StrideBox is a subscription box for runners. For $15 a month, you get a sampling of the latest gadgets, gizmos and nutrition for runners. The value almost always exceeds the price, and this month is no exception. And it's a great way to try out new products. Plus, it's fun to get a surprise in the mail each month, in between the bills and junk mail.
First things first, how cute is this month's sticker, pictured above? "Fast Times and Tan Lines." I think we all have the famous "runners' tan." In my case, it may be permanent. StrideBox actually sells this shirt. If you want one, you can find it here.
This month's box was larger, since the main product was a large water bottle – a practical item that every runner will use. This bottle is BPA-free and easy to hold.
I love Nuun products. I regularly use Nuun tablets to mix with water on my long runs. They are vegan, easy on the tummy, all natural and contain electrolytes. This mix also contains 15 grams of carbs – woo hoo! I think I'll try it out this weekend during my long run.
Swish 4 is an energy "swish" that contains caffeine. A quick swish (like mouthwash) promises to freshen your breath, make you more alert and help you maintain your endurance. I tried it this morning before a steamy run. It was definitely minty fresh. But I honestly do not think it made a difference during my run. But then again, I only ran 5 miles and it was crazy hot and humid out.
I love when StrideBox contains nutrition bars and cookies to sample, especially healthy vegan ones. The GFB is a gluten-free, vegan oatmeal raisin snack bar. The ingredient list features only foodstuffs I can pronounce. And it was delicious – like a Lärabar, but with more interesting, complex spices. Creamy texture. I love that this little bar contains 12 grams of protein (courtesy of pea protein) in addition to 30 grams of carbs, plus 10% RDA of iron – all important for runners and other endurance athletes.
It's really hard to find a vegan sunscreen that works, let alone a waterproof version. Most vegan sunscreens contain an overabundace of zinc oxide, so when you apply it, you look like Caspar the Friendly Ghost (god, that dates me). So I almost cried when I tried KINeSYS sunscreen. This sunscreen is expensive – almost $8 for just 1 ounce – but this is a case of getting what you pay for. And I mostly only use it on my face, shoulder and chest, anyway. This sunscreen is vegan, cruelty-free, water proof, ethically manufactured, alcohol-free and comes in a spray bottle. It contains no preservatives. This was my favorite item this month and I will be buying more. Incidentally, you can get 5% off KINeSYS sunscreen if you type in the code "STRIDEBOX" at the checkout. Which I personally will be doing.
I've tried SiS products before and like them, so I was excited to see this vegan Go SiS energy gel, orange flavor. For those of you who are used to tiny GU gels, this package is honking big. That's because you don't need to take it with water. It's 2 oz and kind of clunky, but give it a go. It's lighter than carrying around extra water.
As usual, StrideBox contains a recipe and a workout of the month. Chunky Monkey Baked Oatmeal sounds good to me, but without eggs. I will save this one for the fall when I will eventually turn on the oven again. The BodyWeight Leg Workout is super important for runners to strengthen those all-important stabilizing muscles that so many of us tend to neglect.
