Happy Bloggiversary to me

I can't believe I've been blogging at Mastering Running for over a year now. Time flies when you're having fun. And I am having fun and am enjoying my life, especially compared to how I felt when I decided to shut down my original blog, The Urban Vegan.

My original blog: some background

I had been blogging at the Urban Vegan for over 9 years. While it was fun and led to three cookbook deals, as well as some amazing friendships, I was completely burned out and decided to take a much-needed sabbatical. I was tired of writing about food. I was exhausted by all the tiresome, divisive infighting in the vegan community.

I was also tired of people stealing my recipes. You know how you see cheapo knock-offs of runway couture at Forever 21, basically appropriated right from a fashion designer's fashion week line up? It's the same principal with recipes. Recipes essentially cannot be copyrighted. It's happened to me. It's happened to many of my friends who are bloggers and cookbook authors. There is an unwritten code of ethics that if you are basing a recipe on someone else's, the right thing to do is to credit that person.  But you'd be surprised at how often that does not happen. And so you have to decide how much energy you want to spend on fighting it.

After a much-needed, blog-free rest of several years, I started this running blog because I wanted to share my love of the sport and to reach out to people in need of a coach.

Mastering Running

When I first started Mastering Running last year, my intention was to write for master's runners – runners who are over 40 years old, hence the name. But I'm finding that people are not "getting" the name. Most people don't know and don't care that master's runners are age 40+. As one friend put it, "Master's runner? I thought that spoke about a skill set, like a master carpenter." Interestingly, my analytics show that 85% of my readers women from ages 25 to 55. Half of my readers are not masters runners.

I thought it would be fun to list my top favorite blog posts from the past year. But before I do, I want to share some news.

Changes are coming

I am a work in progress. Change is the only constant, and this blog will also soon be taking on a new direction & theme. Will I still be writing about running? Absolutely. Running is a constant in my life and it's obviously super important to me. But the next iteration of my blog will focus on lifestyle – my lifestyle, to be specific, covering the spectrum from running, fitness, vegan cooking, and nutrition, to travel, DIY, the outdoors, slow fashion, design and thrifting. A new name will follow. (I'm open to suggestions!). Just wanted to give you a heads up.
